Borrowing – returns – renewals
Can I borrow books while the library is closed?
Borrowing media is possible for students and academic staff of Münster University. They can order books and other media from the collections of the Central Library, the Social Sciences Branch Library, the library of the Institute of Educational Science and the branch library in the Centre for Dutch Studies (Haus der Niederlande) via the catalogue and then borrow them. Since you can only order books in the ULB catalogue if they are located in the selected "Aktuelle Ausleih-Zweigstelle" (Current Lending Branch), you may have to change this selection in the box below the search mask ("Suche eingrenzen") using the drop-down list – the Central Library is the default setting.
Academic staff of the University of Münster will have the media they ordered sent to their office address via internal post. Students can collect their orders from all the libraries mentioned above in the Central Library Mon–Fri between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Students can request up to 5 books per order; more books can only be ordered after the books from the previous order have been collected.
Wenn you order books via the catalogue, you will be given a collection date and pick-up location. This information is currently not reliable. Ordered books can only be collected from the Central Library according to the following rules:
Books from the Central Library can be collected on the second working day (Mon–Fri) after ordering. When you order a book on a Monday, you can collect it on Wednesday, when ordered on Tuesday collect it on Thursday and so on.
Book from the other three libraries mentioned above as well as from the off-site stacks can be collected on the third working day (Mon–Fri) after ordering. When you order a book on a Monday, you can collect it on Thursday, when ordered on Tuesday collect it on Friday and so on.
Media ready for collection are kept available for 5 working days (Mon–Fri). To check whether an ordered book is still available for you to pick up, you can always consult your library account: If the title in question is still listed under "Bestellungen" (= orders), it is still available for you (on this day at least). If the title is no longer listed under "Bestellungen", it has already been re-shelfed.
The Medical Branch Library offers an order & collect service of its own. Please see the library’s website for details.
Departmental and institute libraries:
From 11 May onwards, large departmental and institute libraries will gradually be opening their doors again for borrowing on request. These libraries include: Protestant Theology, Catholic Theology [de], History [de], Philosophy [de] and Art History [de], University of Music [de], Romance Studies [de] and Slavic Studies, English, German Language and Literature [de] as well as the scientific libraries of Psychology [de], Geosciences [de], Mathematics and Computer Science and Sports and Exercise. Information on opening hours, access, ordering options and loan conditions can be found on the websites of the respective institute libraries.
How does collecting the books from the Central Library work?
The library will open its foyer for collecting books from Mondays to Fridays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Please enter the foyer via the revolving door to the right; the exit is through the left door. The area in front of the doors will be marked for queuing; please observe the usual spacing rules (1.5 m minimum distance).

When entering the foyer you have to register at a computer with your student ID card, which has the ULB library card on the back. With this we follow a requirement of the state of North Rhine Westphalia, but it also helps us to prepare your order for collection. You will find marked waiting positions in the foyer. We also ask you to put on your protective mask.
Can I collect books on behalf of a third party?
You can only collect books in the Central Library if you have ordered them personally for your library account. If you wish to collect books on behalf of a third party, please contact us by email (email@example.com) to find an individual solution to your request.
I have borrowed books from the ULB or via interlibrary loan and would like to return them. How can I do that?
You can return books and other media Mondays – Fridays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The return station is situated on the library’s end to the Krummer Timpen, next to the entrance to the Torhaus: You come up the stairs from the Krummer Timpen and the return station is directly in front of you, in the Westfalica reading room.

You can also return books and other media via post to the ULB (Krummer Timpen 3, 48143 Münster) at your own expense. The postmark date is deemed the date of return. Please note that you bear all risks associated with postal dispatch; we therefore recommend that you use an insured parcel service.
I have borrowed books from the ULB. How long can I keep them? Do I have to renew the loan period?
We have extended all your current loans until at least 27 May. From 27 May on you have to renew all books and media you already have borrowed and for newly borrowed media on your own again. Please check your library account regularly!
I have borrowed books from a faculty library. What regulations apply for them?
You can keep all books and other media from these libraries until 27 May. Please check in with the respective library in case you need to keep the media longer than that.
I am neither a student nor an academic staff member of the University of Münster. Can I borrow books?
Borrowing media is currently only possible for students and academic staff of the University of Münster. You can return books Mondays – Fridays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.; see above.
Applying for a ULB library card for users not being a member of the University of Münster is currently not possible.
Will there be any fees during the closure of the ULB?
Your user account had been “frozen” as of 17 March. All fees that have been charged until 17 March and have not been paid yet will be kept, but there will be no new fees until 27 May. From 27 May on there will be fees again for books being returned too late.
I have fees in my account. How can I pay that?
You can pay fees at the pay machine in the foyer of the Central Library; the mode of payment is currently restricted to cashless payment. In case you are not in Münster at the moment you can also pay fees via bank transfer: On the first of each month we send a reminder of open fees by email and give you the bank details for a transfer.
Orders – hold requests
Can I reserve or order books during the closure period?
Orders and reservations are only possible for students and academic staff of the University of Münster. Students can order a maximum of 5 books at a time and reserve 5 books; further books can only be ordered/reserved after they have been picked up.
Media from our collections and interlibrary loans whose use is restricted to the reading room can be consulted there by appointment (see below).
You can find more information in the section “Borrowing – returns – renewals” above.
I have ordered books to consult in the ULB reading room. When can I consult these books?
When you order books whose use is restricted to the reading room you will receive an email with information about making an appointment for consulting the media.
Also valuable and protectable media whose use is restricted to the manuscript reading room can be consulted. In case of media that cannot be ordered via the catalogue please use this order form.
Books and other media from other libraries that you ordered via interlibrary loan will be kept in the reading room as long as the issuing libraries allow us to do so. You will receive an email with information about making an appointment for consulting the media.
Please note that we can only offer you a short consultation and scanning of the media; working with concentration in the reading room over a longer period of time is currently not possible. For using the scanners that are available please bring along an USB stick.

Library card: lost – found
I lost my ULB library card. What should I do?
Please contact us via email (firstname.lastname@example.org), giving your full name, your date of birth and your user number or – if you are a student of the University of Münster – your matriculation number. If you can’t remember your user number, please give your postal address.
I found my lost ULB library card. What should I do now?
Unlocking your library card is possible by individual arrangement. Please contact us via email to email@example.com.
I have borrowed books via interlibrary loan. How long can I keep them?
For these books and other media the same regulations as for ULB books and media apply (see section “Borrowing – returns – renewals” above).
Can I place new interlibrary loan orders?
Interlibrary loan is possible for students and academic staff of Münster University.
Articles from journals and book sections, as well as entire volumes that are not available in the libraries of the University of Münster can be ordered via interlibrary loan.
Articles that are delivered by the end of May can be sent by email due to an exception by the collecting society VG Wort. If this exception is not extended, interlibrary loan copies must be collected from the ULB again after the deadline. This regulation refers to the date of delivery and not the time of ordering.
Books ordered via interlibrary loan can usually be borrowed (see section “Borrowing – returns – renewals” above).
When you order books whose use is restricted to the reading room you will receive an email with information about making an appointment for consulting the media. For more information, please see the section “Orders – hold requests”.
As other libraries are also affected by closures and reduced services, the delivery might take longer than usual, and it could be that some orders cannot be fulfilled.
Services for scientists of the University of Münster
I am a member of the academic staff of the University of Münster. How can I access literature I need for research and teaching?
I am using the courier service of the ULB. Can I still order books?
Yes. Courier delivery is currently suspended, but we will send you books and other media from the collections of the Central Library, the Social Sciences Branch Library, the library of the Institute of Educational Science and the branch library in the Centre for Dutch Studies (Haus der Niederlande) via the new internal post service (see Services for scientists of the University of Münster).
Services for examinees and doctoral students of the University of Münster
I am an examinee or a doctoral student of the University of Münster. How can I access literature I need?
As a student of Münster University you can use the loan services that we currently offer; see section “Borrowing – returns – renewals” above.
I have completed my doctorate. When can I submit my thesis to the ULB?
You can still submit your thesis, but at the moment we cannot offer you fixed service times. Please contact our university publications office team to discuss the procedure via phone (83-24049) or email (firstname.lastname@example.org).
What services does the ULB offer in the corona crisis?
When will the ULB be reopened?
In coordination with the Rectorate and the Occupational Health and Safety Department, the ULB is working hard to make more and more library services available again.
In addition to the supply of electronic media and the interlibrary loan, all members of the University of Münster can order and collect media from the collections of the Central Library, the Social Sciences and Medical Branch Libraries, the library of the Institute of Educational Science and the branch library in the Centre for Dutch Studies (Haus der Niederlande). (Members of the academic staff will continue to receive their orders by internal post.)
In consultation with the deans, other decentralised libraries will gradually be opened for borrowing. External users who are not members of Münster University can use the ULB again when capacity and security regulations allow it. Use of the reading rooms as workplaces will not be possible in the near future in view of the health protection measures necessary for both users and employees. We will keep you up to date via our website.
