• What are the rules for entering the ULB Central Library?

    Please enter the foyer via the revolving door to the right; the exit is through the left door. The area in front of the doors will be marked for queuing; please observe the usual spacing rules (1.5 m minimum distance).

    When entering the foyer you have to register* at a computer with your library card or student ID card (ULB barcode on the back) unless you used the Self-Check-in for a booked seat before entering the library or received other information from us. You will find marked waiting positions in the foyer. We also ask you to put on your protective mask.

    In addition to the usual hygiene rules (keeping distance, sneezing and coughing etiquette, washing your hands), we also ask you to observe the special conditions of use (e.g. maximum number of people or required reservations) for individual areas of the library (see below).

    Privacy statement: The purpose of processing your personal registration data is to document your stay at the ULB in order to ensure traceability in accordance with the Coronaschutzverordnung (Corona Protection Regulation) of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the event that you and/or other visitors to the ULB are found to be infected with the corona virus SARS-CoV-2. The legal basis for processing your personal data is the GDPR (Art. 6) in conjunction with the Coronaschutzverordnung NRW (Art. 2a and 6). This data must be kept for four weeks; after this period we will delete the data.

  • Borrowing – orders – returns

    Can I borrow/order books?

    Borrowing media is possible for all students of Münster University with an activated student ID card as well as for all other users of the ULB with a valid ULB library card:

    Books and other media from the textbook collection can be retrieved directly from the shelf and checked out at the counter in the foyer.

    Other borrowable books and other media from the collections of the Central Library can be ordered via the ULB catalogue [de] and collected in the library. This also applies to the collections of

    The Medical Branch Library [de] has its own rules for borrowing and ordering.

    Media from our collections and interlibrary loans whose use is restricted to the (manuscript) reading room can be consulted by appointment (see "Use of rooms, devices and holdings on site").

    How can I use the textbook collection?

    The textbook collection is open from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 15 persons are allowed to enter the textbook collection at the same time, provided that everyone wears a protective mask and keeps the necessary distances. Counting is done by means of baskets; each user must carry a basket when entering the area. If the maximum number of people in the textbook collection is reached, waiting times are to be expected. Our time-saving tip: While still at home, you can already browse online through the shelf classification [de] of the textbook collection.

    The textbooks are checked out at the counter in the foyer; the self-issue machines are currently not in operation.

    How does ordering and collecting books work?

    Since you can only order books in the ULB catalogue if they are located in the selected "Aktuelle Ausleih-Zweigstelle" (Current Lending Branch), you may have to change this selection in the box below the search mask ("Suche eingrenzen") using the drop-down list – the Central Library is the default setting.
    To order a specific book, select the function "Bestellung/Vormerkung" (= order/reservation) in the detailed display of the catalogue and click on "bestellen/vormerken".

    Wenn you order books via the catalogue, you will be given a collection date and pick-up location. This information is currently not reliable. Ordered books can be collected according to the following rules:

    Ordered books from the Central Library (location Krummer Timpen), the Social Sciences Branch Library and the library of the Institute of Educational Science can be collected on the second working day (MonFri) after ordering. When you order a book on a Monday, you can collect it on Wednesday, when ordered on Tuesday collect it on Thursday and so on.
    Books from the branch library in the Centre for Dutch Studies (Haus der Niederlande) as well as from the off-site stacks can be collected in the Central Library on the third working day (MonFri) after ordering. When you order a book on a Monday, you can collect it on Thursday, when ordered on Tuesday collect it on Friday and so on.

    Media ready for collection are kept available for 5 working days (MonFri). To check whether an ordered book is still available for you to pick up, you can always consult your library account: If the title in question is still listed under "Bestellungen" (= orders), it is still available for you (on this day at least). If the title is no longer listed under "Bestellungen", it has already been re-shelfed.

    You can collect your orders from the Central Library and the branch library in the Centre for Dutch Studies (Haus der Niederlande) in the Central Library (MonFri 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Sat/Sun 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.). Orders from the Social Sciences Branch Library and the library of the Institute of Educational Science can be collected in the Social Sciences Branch Library (MonFri 8:45 a.m. – 5 p.m.). Users of the courier service (user number starting with X) will receive their orders via internal post.

    Can I collect books on behalf of a third party?

    You can only collect books in the Central Library if you have ordered them personally for your library account. If you wish to collect books on behalf of a third party, please contact us by email (leihstelle.ulb@uni-muenster.de) to find an individual solution to your request.

    I have borrowed books from the ULB or via interlibrary loan and would like to return them. How can I do that?

    You can return books and other media during the entire opening hours in the Central Library: Mondays – Fridays between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. at the circulation desk in the foyer and between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at the "Bücherbox" (book box), on the weekend between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the circulation desk and between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the "Bücherbox".

    You can also return books and other media in the Social Sciences Branch Library (MonFri 8:45 a.m. – 5 p.m.) or via post to the ULB (Krummer Timpen 3, 48143 Münster) at your own expense. The postmark date is deemed the date of return. Please note that you bear all risks associated with postal dispatch; we therefore recommend that you use an insured parcel service.

    I have borrowed books from the ULB. How long can I keep them? Do I have to renew the loan period?

    Since 27 May, you have to renew all borrowed books and other media on your own. Please check your library account regularly!

  • Fees

    Will there be any fees?

    Your user account had been “frozen” from 17 March to 27 May, so there were no new fees for that time. Since 27 May, there will be fees again for books being returned too late.

    I have fees in my account. How can I pay that?

    You can pay fees of 1 EUR or more at the pay machine in the foyer of the Central Library; the mode of payment is restricted to cashless payment.
    In case you are not in Münster at the moment you can also pay fees via bank transfer: On the first of each month we send a reminder of open fees by email and give you the bank details for a transfer.

  • Library card

    I do not have a ULB library card yet. How can I register?

    The online offers for registration or activation of the student ID card presented on the library card page apply. A more time-consuming in-person registration/activation on site is currently not possible.

    I lost my ULB library card. What should I do?

    Please contact us via email (leihstelle.ulb@uni-muenster.de), giving your full name, your date of birth and your user number or – if you are a student of the University of Münster – your matriculation number. If you can’t remember your user number, please give your postal address.

    I found my lost ULB library card. What should I do now?

    Unlocking your library card is possible by individual arrangement. Please contact us via email to leihstelle.ulb@uni-muenster.de.

  • Interlibrary loan

    I have borrowed books via interlibrary loan. How long can I keep them?

    For these books and other media the same regulations as for ULB books and media apply (see section "Borrowing – orders – returns" above).

    Can I place new interlibrary loan orders?

    Interlibrary loan is possible for all students of Münster University with an activated student ID card as well as for all other users of the ULB with a valid ULB library card.

    Articles from journals and book sections, as well as entire volumes that are not available in the libraries of the University of Münster can be ordered via interlibrary loan.
    Interlibrary loan copies must be collected from the ULB. An exception by the collecting society VG Wort, which made electronic transmission possible, expired at the end of May.
    Books ordered via interlibrary loan can usually be borrowed (see section "Borrowing – orders – returns" above). When you order books whose use is restricted to the reading room you will receive an email with information about making an appointment for consulting the media (see section "Use of rooms, devices and holdings on site" below).

    As other libraries are also affected by closures and reduced services, the delivery might take longer than usual, and it could be that some orders cannot be fulfilled.

  • Use of rooms, devices and holdings on site

    Can I use the workspaces in the reading room, the group room and the research room?

    Individual workspaces in the main reading room and the Westfalica reading room can be reserved and used for learning and working under special hygiene rules. Individual workspaces in the group room, which is not a quiet zone, can also be reserved.

    The research room can currently only be used by people who have made an appointment for consulting media whose use is restricted to the reading room (see below) or electronic media: For users who are not members of the University of Münster, we offer appointments for consulting e-books and e-journals as well as other licensed resources that you can book via lesesaal.ulb@uni-muenster.de. The following time slots are currently available: Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. – 3 p.m., Monday additionally 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. Please let us know three possible dates for your visit, we will then reserve the first available date for you. Please give your telephone number as well, as it must be recorded according to the Coronaschutzverordnung (Corona Protection Regulation). Please bring a USB flash drive to the appointment to save files. A printer is not available.

    Can I copy/scan/print?

    While using a booked seat, you can also use the copy room on the 1st floor. There you can currently use three multifunction printers for copying, scanning and printing. In June, all multifunction printers at the University of Münster have been replaced. Instructions for the new multifunction printers can be found nearby.

    Using scanners in the DigiLab [de] (ground floor) is possible after making an appointment.

    Can I as an exam candidate rent a locker in the reading room?

    Since we cannot currently guarantee access to the reading room within a certain time frame, we are not offering this service in the winter semester 2020/2021.

    I have ordered books to consult in the ULB reading room or the manuscript reading room. When can I consult these books?

    When you order books whose use is restricted to the reading room / manuscript reading room you will receive an email with information about making an appointment for consulting the media.
    For media that cannot be ordered via the catalogue (e.g. reading room copies, recent journal volumes) please contact us by email at lesesaal.ulb@uni-muenster.de; for media like manuscripts and personal papers please use the order form for the manuscript reading room as usual.
    Books and other media from other libraries that you ordered via interlibrary loan will be kept as long as the issuing libraries allow us to do so.

    Please note that you can only consult the media for an hour in the research room (time slots see above) or for two hours in the manuscript reading room (Wed + Fri 10 a.m. – 12 noon + 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.); working and learning with concentration in the main reading room and the Westfalica reading room is separately regulated (see above). For using the scanners (including one for ordered microfiches and microfilms) that are available in the research room please bring along a USB stick.

    I am using the courier service of the ULB. Can I still order books?

    Yes. You can order books and other media from the collections of the Central Library (except books from the textbook collection), the Social Sciences Branch Library, the library of the Institute of Educational Science and the branch library in the Centre for Dutch Studies (Haus der Niederlande) via the ULB catalogue [de].

    If you want to order a book from the textbook collection ("Zentralbibliothek / Lehrbuch-Magazin (EG)"), go to the detailed view of the hit in the ULB catalogue [de], look for the right-hand box titled "weitere Optionen" and click on "Treffer ausgeben". A form will open in which you should leave the option "Ausgabe im Vollformat" marked and enter the following information:
    Betreff: Your user number ; Your email address ; Your last name
    Empfänger: kurierdienst.ulb@uni-muenster.de
    Then click on "Versenden".
    (Please do not send lists, but send each title separately.)

    Your orders will be sent to you via internal post.

  • Departmental and institute libraries

    I have borrowed books from an institute library. How long can I keep them?

    How can I use holdings of institute libraries?

    Departmental and institute libraries will gradually be opening their doors again for borrowing on request or on-site consultation of the holdings. Information on opening hours, access, ordering options and loan conditions can be found on the websites of the respective institute libraries [de].

  • What services does the ULB offer in the corona crisis?

    In coordination with the Rectorate, the deans and the Occupational Health and Safety Department, the ULB is working hard to make more and more services of the Central Library and the decentralised libraries available again in addition to those already mentioned here.
    Please understand that the information cannot be kept up to date in all places; the information on the ULB web pages created or revised in the course of the corona crisis or the information provided by ULB employees are to be considered reliable in this respect.
