  • What are the rules for entering the ULB Central Library?

    Opening hours

Please enter the foyer via the revolving door to the right; the exit is through the left door. Please observe the usual spacing rules (1.5 m minimum distance).

    © WWU

3G access restrictions no longer apply and there is no obligation to wear a mask. However, in view of the current infection situation, we still ask you to wear a mask inside the ULB out of solidarity and for everyone's protection.

All areas (including the stacks) may be accessed with jackets and bags; only umbrellas must be deposited in the bin in the ground floor reading room.

In addition to the usual hygiene rules (keeping distance, sneezing and coughing etiquette, washing your hands), we also ask you to observe the special conditions of use (e.g. maximum number of people or reservations) for individual areas of the library (see below).

  • Borrowing – orders – returns

    Can I borrow/order books?

Borrowing media is possible for all students of Münster University with an activated student ID card as well as for all other users of the ULB with a valid ULB library card.

Freely accessible and directly borrowable books and other media (e.g. in the textbook collection) you can take from the shelf yourself and check them out at the counter in the foyer.
Other books and media (e.g. from the closed stacks) must be ordered via the ULB catalogue [de].
Media from our collections and interlibrary loans whose use is restricted to the (manuscript) reading room can be consulted (see "Use of rooms, devices and holdings on site").

How can I use the textbook collection and the open stacks?

The textbook collection and the open stacks are accessible, but only a limited number of people are allowed to enter at the same time. Counting is done by means of baskets; each user must carry a basket when entering the area. If the maximum number of people is reached, waiting times are to be expected. Our time-saving tip: While still at home, you can already browse online through the shelf classification [de] of the textbook collection.

    The open stacks are accessible MonFri 8 a.m. – 9:30 p.m., Sat/Sun 10 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. The textbook collection is open MonFri 9 a.m. – 10 p.m., Sat/Sun 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

The books are checked out at the counter in the foyer.

How does ordering and collecting books work?

If you want to borrow books and other media that have the status "bestellbar" (available for order), please order them via the ULB catalogue [de].
Since you can only order/reserve books in the ULB catalogue if they are located in the selected "Aktuelle Ausleih-Zweigstelle" (Current Lending Branch), you may have to change this selection in the box below the search mask ("Suche eingrenzen") using the drop-down list – the Central Library is the default setting.
To order a specific book, select the function "Bestellung/Vormerkung" (= order/reservation) in the detailed display of the catalogue and click on "bestellen/vormerken".

When you order books via the catalogue, you will be given a collection date and pick-up location. Due to system-related reasons, this information is currently not always reliable. You will be notified by email when your order is ready for you. Therefore, please check the email address listed in your account and update it if necessary.

Media ready for collection are kept available for 10 working days (MonFri). To check whether an ordered book is still available for you to pick up, you can always consult your library account: If the title in question is still listed under "Bestellungen" (= orders), it is still available for you (on this day at least). If the title is no longer listed under "Bestellungen", it has already been re-shelfed.

You can collect your orders from the Central Library Mon – Fri 9 a.m. – 10 p.m., Sat/Sun 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Orders from the Social Sciences [de] Branch Library, the Medical Branch Library and the library of the Institute of Educational Science and Communication Science can be collected at the respective library location.
Users of the courier service (user number starting with X) will receive their orders via internal post.

The self-collection area in the Central Library cannot be entered, the books will be provided by ULB staff. For textbook sales, however, access is possible for 1 person at a time.

Can I collect books on behalf of a third party?

You can only collect books in the Central Library if you have ordered them personally for your library account. If you wish to collect books on behalf of a third party, you must present a written authority [de].

I have borrowed books from the ULB or via interlibrary loan and would like to return them. How can I do that?

You can return books and other media during the entire opening hours in the Central Library: Mondays – Fridays between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the circulation desk in the foyer.

You can also return books and other media in the Social Sciences Branch Library or in the library of the Institute of Educational Science and Communication Science or via post to the ULB (Krummer Timpen 3, 48143 Münster) at your own expense. The postmark date is deemed the date of return. Please note that you bear all risks associated with postal dispatch; we therefore recommend that you use an insured parcel service. Please also include a note with your name, user number and the shelfmarks of the returned books in the package.

I have borrowed books from the ULB. How long can I keep them? Do I have to renew the loan period?

You have to renew all borrowed books and other media on your own. Please check your library account regularly!

  • Fees

    Will there be any fees?

In case of late returns, the usual fees [de] will apply.

I have fees in my account. How can I pay that?

You can pay fees of 1 EUR or more at the pay machine in the foyer of the Central Library or in the Medical Branch Library; the mode of payment is restricted to cashless payment.
In case you are not in Münster at the moment you can also pay fees via bank transfer: On the first of each month we send a reminder of open fees by email and give you the bank details for a transfer; you can also use the GiroCode in your library account.

  • Library card

I do not have a ULB library card yet. How can I register?

Students of the University of Münster can activate their student ID card as a ULB library card online. All other persons can apply for a library card using the online form. The card will then be sent to you by post. You can find the form on the library card page.

Alternatively, you can apply for a library card or have your student ID card activated during the opening hours of the registration desk in the ground floor reading room of the Central Library Monday to Friday 11 a.m. – 12 noon and 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. and by arrangement. This is also possible in the Medical Branch Library at certain times. The library card will be issued to you immediately.

I lost my ULB library card. What should I do?

Please contact us via email (leihstelle.ulb@uni-muenster.de), giving your full name, your date of birth and your user number or – if you are a student of the University of Münster – your matriculation number. If you can’t remember your user number, please give your postal address.

I found my lost ULB library card. What should I do now?

Unlocking your library card is possible by individual arrangement. Please contact us via email to leihstelle.ulb@uni-muenster.de.

  • Interlibrary loan

I have borrowed books via interlibrary loan. How long can I keep them?

For these books and other media the same regulations as for ULB books and media apply (see section "Borrowing – orders – returns" above).

Can I place new interlibrary loan orders?

Interlibrary loan is possible for all students of Münster University with an activated student ID card as well as for all other users of the ULB with a valid ULB library card.

Articles from journals and book sections, as well as entire volumes that are not available in the libraries of the University of Münster can be ordered via interlibrary loan.
Interlibrary loan copies must be collected from the ULB. (An exception by the collecting society VG Wort, which made electronic transmission possible, expired at the end of July 2021.)
Books ordered via interlibrary loan can usually be borrowed (see section "Borrowing – orders – returns" above). When you order books whose use is restricted to the reading room you will receive an email with information about making an appointment for consulting the media (see section "Use of rooms, devices and holdings on site" below).

As other libraries are also affected by closures and reduced services, the delivery might take longer than usual, and it could be that some orders cannot be fulfilled.

  • Use of rooms, devices and holdings on site

Can I use the workspaces in the reading rooms and the group workspace?

Individual workspaces can be used for learning and working. Some workspaces in correspondingly marked areas can be reserved via the Seat Reservation Service, others are free for use.
Group work in the group workspace is possible again; the cabins can be reserved.

For using the scanners (including one for ordered microfiches and microfilms) that are available in the DigiLab [de] please bring along a USB stick.
Consultation of valuable manuscript reading room orders (autographs, manuscripts, old prints, personal papers) takes place by appointment and under supervision in the manuscript reading room.

For media that cannot be ordered via the catalogue like manuscripts and personal papers please use the order form for the manuscript reading room as usual.

Books and other media from other libraries that you ordered via interlibrary loan will be kept as long as the issuing libraries allow us to do so.

How can I use electronic media licensed by the ULB?

For licensing reasons, these media (e.g. e-books or e-journals) are generally only available on the university network.
Students and staff of Münster University can access the electronic media on the university network via the university's Wi-Fi or on a computer in one of the university's institutes. Access from home is possible via a VPN connection.
