Using the workspaces during the Coronavirus pandemic

Following the measures taken against the spread of the Coronavirus, the ULB services can only resume gradually.

Current situation regarding the use of the ULB reading room:

  • Reading and learning: Individual seats in the main reading room or the Westfalica reading room can be booked and used following special hygiene rules – see below for more information.
  • Books whose use is restricted to the reading room: Consulting media ordered from such collections is currently only possible in the research room – see the FAQs.

Current situation regarding the use of the ULB group room:
Group work is currently not permitted in the group room. Instead, individual workspaces (simple work table, carrel or sound-insulated cabin) can be reserved there as well. Since the group room is not a quiet zone, it is particularly suitable for participation in digital courses.

You can book a seat in the Central Library's reading room and group room and in other libraries [de] of the University of Münster via the Seat Reservation Service. Seats in the Central Library can be booked as follows:

  • main reading room & group room:
    MonFri 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.* and 2 p.m. – 8 p.m.
    Sat/Sun 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Westfalica reading room:
    MonFri 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
    Sat/Sun 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

21 to 29 July: Extension of opening hours during the exam period [de]

* You can use your booked seat until the start of the next time slot at 2 p.m., even if the end of your time slot is specified as 1:30 p.m. in the Seat Reservation Service. This system setting is intended to enable you to reserve a subsequent time slot from 1:30 p.m. in the Law Library I (RWS I) without overlap, if you so desire.

Students and scientists of Münster University can book seats up to 7 days and 2 hours in advance. How many reservations you can make per day or per week can be checked in the FAQ of the Seat Reservation Service. Seats available in short term can be booked "last minute" from one hour before the time slot starts, even if your reservation budget per day or per week is already exhausted. In case you cannot use a reservation you can easily cancel it; if you cancel up to 24 hours before the start of the reservation, you can use this "slot budget" for a reservation on another date.

External users can book available seats "last minute" from one hour before the time slot starts.

To use the Seat Reservation Service, you need a valid ULB library card and a valid WWU ID or "Bürgerkennung" (ID for external users).
If your student ID card is not yet activated for using the ULB, you can simply start the activation process online. You will receive a message to your Münster University email address when the activation is complete. Please note: For the Seat Reservation Service, the newly activated card can only be used the day after activation, since the data transfer from the loan system to the Seat Reservation Service only occurs once a day.
If you as an external user do not yet have a ULB library card, you can apply for a "Bürgerkennung" together with your library card. If you already have a ULB library card but do not yet have a "Bürgerkennung", please contact the ULB circulation department ( with your user number.
