Explore the Central Library of the University

You can take our audio tour anytime you like during opening hours.  You will learn how to get your library card, how to find and borrow books or journals. And of course, you  can explore our different service areas.

Audio tour during the current corona situation

Please note that in response to the Corona pandemia the ULB Central Library can only be used to a limited extent and that you cannot conduct the audio tour on site.

The ULB constantly adapts the services offered to the current situation. Therefore, it is possible that some services may not be offered at all or in a different form.

You can still listen to the audio tour for "normal operation" - the files for this can be found further down on this page.

What you need to do:

In order to acces the MP3 files please choose one of the following options.

Streaming: Use an internet connection via smartphone to stream the files (see below).

Preparing in advance: Before visiting the ULB you can transfer all files onto your smartphone.

QR Codes: Each stopping point of the tour provides a QR Code so that you can use your smartphone to access the tour. In order to do this, you need an internet connection and a QR Code reader.

  University's Wifi is available for all students and employees of Muenster University.

The  leaflet will help you find your way around the library. It is also available at the Information Desk on the ground floor.

The first stopping point of our tour is in the foyer. You can take the tour in the recommended order - or choose the stopping points to suit your individual needs and interests.

1. Look up the newest edition of the title in the catalogue.

2. Note down the appropriate shelfmark for the locations at the central library:

  • Textbook Collection (Ground Floor)

3. Go and look for the item while exploring the library.

Foyer

Corona measures: When entering the foyer through the right door, you have to register at a computer with your library card or student ID card (ULB barcode on the back).  You will find marked waiting positions in the foyer. During your entire stay in the library it is obligatory to wear your protective mask.

Research Room

Corona measures:The workstations in the research room are currently not accessible, nor are the viewing areas for literature requiring reading room access in the back of the room.

Textbook Collection

Corona measures
Until 31.01.2021 for the time being, the textbook magazine is not freely accessible.

You can pre-order the book online via the ULB catalogue. Please note:

  • More than 10 orders at a time are not possible at the moment.
  • You discover the status "entliehen" = on loan?:  Nevertheless try to order it via "Bestellung/Vormerkung". Mabe another copy ist available.
  • As soon as you borrow an ordered book, there is space for another order.
  • Please wait for the e-mail confirmation that your book is ready. Unfortunately, the automatically generated information in the lending system about the collection period and collection location is not reliable at present.

In the library, you can obtain your title at the circulation desk in the foyer by presenting your ULB user card.

Our time-saving tip: While still at home, you can already browse online through the shelf classification [de] of the textbook collection.

The textbooks are checked out at the counter in the foyer.

Open Stacks In The Basements

Corona measures: These open stacks are currently not yet freely accessible. In the catalogue, the media can usually be ordered online - for loan or at least for viewing in the reading room.
You can pre-order the book online via the ULB catalogue. Please note:

Reading Room

Corona measures:
The reading room and manuscript reading room cannot be used on site due to the current Corona protection measures. This means that you cannot reserve study spaces or use them on site at the moment.
It is also not possible to consult reading room holdings or literature requiring reading room access on site. E-mail contact to the reading room team: please contact us by e-mail at lesesaal.ulb@uni-muenster.de; for media such as manuscripts, please use the order form of the Manuscript Reading Room.

DigiLab And Information Desk

At the moment, you cannot use the equipment in the DigiLab due to the current protective measures. As soon as possible, we will offer the possibility to make appointments for individual appointments again. Please keep track of when the restrictions will be lifted under News.

Do you need certification that you have completed the audio tour?

You can take part in our online test in the Learnweb (only students and other members of the WWU). The questions in the Learnweb refer to the eleven stopping points of the main tour. If you have passed the test, we will send you an email and you can download your certificate. Please note that we need one or two working days to send you the email.
